The problem
By the time seafood reaches the stage of its first processing document, its origin is already a claim — a landing record that somebody typed. If the vessel data behind that record is missing, you're only trusting paperwork, not evidence.
That's how IUU catch and unproven claims slip into the market. And it's why brands end up defending sourcing they can't actually prove — the risk arrives before the product is even bought.
Document verification isn't traceability
Border checks and catch-certificate systems verify documents once the product is already arriving. They don't establish where the fish came from — and the industry itself keeps making exactly that distinction: without reliable upstream data, you aren't building full traceability, you're building document verification.
Full-chain traceability has to start earlier, at the source. That's the gap SmarTuna is built to close.
The approach
SmarTuna captures first-mile data directly — satellite VMS and AIS vessel tracks, catch data and discharge volumes — and turns it into a Raw Material ID before a single document is entered by hand.

One unbroken chain
From that verified origin, every step becomes a linked event, recorded on the GS1-EPCIS standard and fully GDST-compatible — so the data travels cleanly across your whole supply chain.
Every Raw Material ID, raw material and product passport is a traceable object — followed forward or traced back, right down to a code on the packaging.

Satellite coverage isn't perfect. Where AIS or VMS data has gaps, SmarTuna shows them plainly rather than smoothing them over.
Buyers doing genuine due diligence trust visible gaps far more than a suspiciously clean line.
