SmarTuna

Solutions / Full-chain traceability

Proof that starts at the vessel — not the paperwork.

SmarTuna builds every traceability record from independent at-sea data — satellite VMS, AIS and catch records — the moment fishing begins, then follows your seafood in one unbroken chain all the way to the final product destination.

The problem

Most traceability starts too late.

By the time seafood reaches the stage of its first processing document, its origin is already a claim — a landing record that somebody typed. If the vessel data behind that record is missing, you're only trusting paperwork, not evidence.

That's how IUU catch and unproven claims slip into the market. And it's why brands end up defending sourcing they can't actually prove — the risk arrives before the product is even bought.

Document verification isn't traceability

The industry keeps drawing the same line.

Border checks and catch-certificate systems verify documents once the product is already arriving. They don't establish where the fish came from — and the industry itself keeps making exactly that distinction: without reliable upstream data, you aren't building full traceability, you're building document verification.

Full-chain traceability has to start earlier, at the source. That's the gap SmarTuna is built to close.

The approach

We start where the fish does.

SmarTuna captures first-mile data directly — satellite VMS and AIS vessel tracks, catch data and discharge volumes — and turns it into a Raw Material ID before a single document is entered by hand.

Your origin isn't undefined. It's observed.

Vessel identity and track

Who caught it, and where — from satellite VMS and AIS positions across the trip.

Catch composition and volume

Species and certified weight, from catch reporting and outturn data.

Transshipment and discharge

Every hand-off, at sea and at port, recorded as it happens.

This is the part a system starting downstream can't reproduce. If you start at the first document, the origin is only ever as good as that document. The screening side of this — is the vessel legitimate — lives in Vessel & Farm Monitoring.

One unbroken chain

Vessel to product code, every step linked.

From that verified origin, every step becomes a linked event, recorded on the GS1-EPCIS standard and fully GDST-compatible — so the data travels cleanly across your whole supply chain.

Verified where it exists

Gaps shown, never hidden.

Satellite coverage isn't perfect. Where AIS or VMS data has gaps, SmarTuna shows them plainly rather than smoothing them over.

Buyers doing genuine due diligence trust visible gaps far more than a suspiciously clean line.

Proof that pays for itself

A verified chain takes cost out, not just risk.

When evidence is captured at the source and linked as you go, an audit or a buyer request becomes a retrieval, not a week of assembling files by hand.

And because you can see a gap the moment it appears — a missing document, a weight that doesn't reconcile — you can fix it while the product is still moving, instead of paying for it later in a hold or a rejected consignment at the border. That's the whole idea behind clearing customs the first time.

Built for the whole ocean

See a chain traced end to end.

SmarTuna works across all oceans, all seafood species, and every major fishing and farming method — purse seine, longline, aquaculture and the transshipment workflows in between.

Developed by Pacifical, the team behind the traceability system used by the world's largest MSC-certified purse-seine tuna fishery.
