The constraint

Document checks and origin checks are not the same thing

A certificate confirms that someone attested to something. It doesn’t independently establish where a product came from, whether the vessel behind it was authorized, or whether the product can really be traced from catch to shipment.

Border and verification checks usually happen late — when the product is arriving, or weeks after a fishing trip has ended. By then the data has passed through many people and systems, so you receive a summary instead of the original records.

How compliance is reported

Compliance shown as a matrix, not a claim

Compliance against a standard is reported using data elements for each stage of the chain — met, expiring, or not yet met — evaluated at whichever date is relevant.

That turns an assessment into something specific: not whether an operator considers itself compliant, but exactly which elements are evidenced at what stage, and where there are gaps.

Where the data is thin, that's visible too

Satellite coverage has gaps. Some records arrive incomplete. A system that always presents a seamless picture is telling you less than you think.

SmarTuna shows completeness as it actually is — which events are complete, which are missing elements, and where there are gaps in tracking data. For anyone assessing a chain, knowing where the evidence is thin is as useful as the evidence itself.
